Post subject: Cats, Scarfs, and Straightjackets... oh my!

Good morning, Knitty World! I'm Entrelac's baby sister. I used her site to get here as a friend asked a knitting question on my blog. Unfortunately for her, I don't knit. Fortunately for her, my sisters do and have links to here. So, here I am, with her questions. I promise to post your replies to my blog when they arrive so she can see, and if I can figure out how to put up picture banners on my blog, a nifty Knitty.com banner up to!

On to the questions:

-=-

From Pistol Kitten.
I am in the process of knitting myself a scarf, when I am done I am going to knit a matching one for Mia...based on this I think I am definately crazy. (I'm just jealous because I made scarves for my parents and little matching ones for each of their dogs..kinda a his and hers thing somehow I leftout myself and Mia.)

Do you have any suggestions on how to keep the scarf on the cat? Do you know if it's possible to knit straight jackets and where I could get a cat-sized pattern for one?

PS. I can't read knitting patterns and actually can't knit anything other than scarves and I guess blankets since they are kinda just like gigantic scarves. Ana and Ceci are my knitting heros!

PSS. Here's a funny little fact.
There has been much debate about whether I knit at all. Some people (mainly old ladies so they are probably right) think that I purl. I only know one stitch and I am completely unaware of what that stitch style is called. So I either knit OR I purl everything! Who knows?! The first time this was brought to my attention the following conversation occured:

(*Lene knitting/purling at work)
Old Lady: You don't know how to knit.
Lene: What?
OL: You aren't doing it right.
Lene: What?
OL: That's not how you do it! You're doing it wrong!
Lene: (picks up pile of yarn that completely resembles a scarf..looks at old lady) Scarf!
OL: What?
Lene: (still holding scarf) Scarf!
OL: But it's not right!
Lene: (still holding scarf) SCAAARRRRFFF!!!
OL: FINE!

-=-

So, if anyone can help my friend out on these questions, drop a line here on this post! I'll check back and give her your replies.

PS: How DO you check if one knits or pearls? Is there even a difference?

Tangled in Yarn,
Entrelac's Baby Sister

I love the response. I'll have to use it if anyone ever questions my knitterliness!

As for knitting or purling, I'd go to www.knittinghelp.com, they have videos of all the basic knitting techniques. See somebody knit! See somebody purl! See what the heck it is you're doing! Very Happy

Knitting back and forth every row and purling back and forth every row make identical fabric - garter stitch. People who knit by scooping up the yarn with the needle tip may find knitting every row faster than purling. I knit by wrapping the yarn around the needle with my finger - knitting and purling take exactly the same ammount of time. So it doesn't really matter as long as you like the results you are getting.

Thanks for the chuckle. I have no idea how one might keep a scarf on a cat, though. I suppose that it would depend on the calmness of the cat. You could maybe make it so the scarf buttons around the neck. I'd be careful to make sure that the cat doesn't chew on the scarf, though. You wouldn't want to end up at the emergency vet having yarn removed from the cat's stomach.

If she's knitting every row, which makes garter stitch, not stockinette like sweaters. The back of a knit is a purl, so if the rows are very close together as in using smaller needles, then it might look like all purls.

Well...first of all, thanks for the laugh. Sounds like Lene needs to join us here on the Knittyboard as she'll keep us all in stitches (sorry, no awful pun intended)

My serious answer is, dogs will tolerate being dressed up because they are docile and obedient. Cats are far too independent to wear scarves (although Miss Florapie did have some lovely blue pop-purls which matched her eyes nicely). Perhaps Lene should put her knitting/purling skills to use making a bigger sized scarf for her cat to lie on, as that's what my cats like to do with scarves. Particularly if they're made out of some kind of luxury yarn.

As for the straightjacket, if your cat needs a straightjacket, you have bigger problems than whether you're purling or knitting ((Smile))

I once tried to put a harness on my cat to take him for a walk. It wasn't pretty... ((Wink))

Yeah, Clauie, I'm with Florapie on this one. If PistolKitten (the newbie knitter with the question, not Lene) needs a straightjacket for her cat, then there's little hope of getting said kitty to wear a scarf.

Even my doggy Crackbaby isn't a scarf fan. Heck the only cat I know of that LOVES to wear knitwear and even models them for photos is Nimrodel70's Scout.

So tell PistolKitten that we're all happy to help her with her knitting technique, but for kitty knitwear, I think there's not muh we can do to help her. If she'd rather, I might be able to find another "Keep Austin Pets Weird" t-shirt like Crackie used to wear. (It was just a hair too snug for him 'cause he's a puffy-fur cat and it fit knitting buddy Renee's Chinese Crested MUCH better.)

Editor's Note: I spoke with Ana and made it clear that Arlene=Lene=Pistol Kitten. She didn't know that when she posted. LOL We love you, Ana!!

Hahahaha, ah, the memories. I tried that with Ror. He flopped on his side - it was more like taking the cat for a drag (no, don't worry, I didn't actually drag him). Sans harness, when I finally allowed the cats outdoors, they would both follow me around the block whenever I was out for a walk with the dog. It was really cute. But I think they did it just to mock the dog - "Look at you, slobber breath! You have to wear a leash! Nyahh!"

I'm pretty sure that Ror could figure out how to get out of a straightjacket. And a hat definitely did not go over well. If you really wanted to get kitty to wear a scarf, maybe you could knit something that would incorporate the collar?

How about a keyhole style scarf for kitty? That should make at least an attempt to stay on, but you don't want anything that won't easily come off if it gets stuck on, in, or around something.

PK: Spoke with Ana on the phone. She wanted to set up a live video conference online so she can see what you're doing and you can see what she does and so forth. Call me so we can try to set that up at your convinence. I may be a tad busy until... February? *^^* As for the scarf-on-a-cat question, Ana's best suggestion was to get an inch wide soft satin craft ribbon and see if Mia will tolerate that with a little button or a tie or something. If she does, then a knitted scarf won't be a big step. Ana's just worried you'll put a lot of investment into something Mia may hate. Personally, I like the staple gun idea, but only cause of the cartoony visuals!

LOL Reply as you like to the knitty board posts in the above comments. I'll put them on the knitty board for you.

I love being the middle man!

Oh man! This is gonna be hard to keep straight.

To Batty: Sweet Jesus! Watching those videos didn't help! I do not do either of those things. I definately think that I do a strange Lenecentric version of Knitting because the pointy ends of my needles cross each other like little swords while the purl video showed one needle pointing up and the other wasn't pointing up. So my conclusion...I don't know what I'm doing but I can SCARF!!!!!

To gracielou: Showoff! You and all your fancy terms! :) I'm kidding of course. That kinda sorta made sense, a little. :) Thanks for trying!

To Vydellia: I had actually thought about the button idea and I appreciate the concern about the dangers of mixing yarn and cats. Unfortunately my cat will end up at the ER Vet no matter what I do. That's just the way she works. She's very self destructive.

To suzeeq: Huh!? So purls and knits(es) look different? Interesting...very interesting.

To florapie: You are a hoot! I think we should go on the road! Now, dressing up my cat, oddly enough, is the ONLY way to make her nice. You see, she is basically Satan and she is only happy when she is completely miserable. Since the vet has already said it isn't ethically sound to perform a random, unnecessary surgery on a weekly basis and that he also can not tranquilizer her for no reason, clothing is the best I can do! Now, most cats can't walk when there is something constricting their abdomen, however Mia is purrfectly capable of moving about freely. The vet believes this is just part of her neurosis! She is even sweeter when we match because I think to her the thought of it even APPEARING that she and I bond and therefore that she loves me, makes her the most miserable of all!

I will reply to the rest later! Thank you Clauie! I will call you later. I tried to call you back yesterday but I guess it was already too late because your phone was off.

As for the call, yeah. Probably. It's okay. I forgot what I wanted to chatter about anyway. Stupid baby-brain!

I love your replies btw! They're ALMOST as good as your stories and rants! Oh! Guess what?! They're ALMOST done with the IHOP here in Edinburg. Can we go for coffee and funnel cakes... sometime when I'm allowed to eat it? Or, maybe before. I'll buy, and live vicariously through you, and eat a salad instead.

MUAH!

PS: No new replies from Knitty yet.

PK aka Arlene said...

YEAH!! IHOP!!! Of course we can go...anytime after I'm over my current bout of nastiness which consists of cough, mucus, a canker sore IN MY EYE, an lots and lots of drainage and sneezing! I REFUSE to get near any baby brewers at this point in time. Once I am better we will go for coffee and salads for both of us! I don't need the funnel cake either.

I don't wanna!!! T.T
